Ahhhh…that minty fresh feeling. The “minty fresh feeling” that famous chewing gum companies sell has some validity as peppermint is an herb known for its’ cooling properties. This is why My Friend Violet uses a triple mint blend for cooling hot flashes in our Vi!tal Cool Touch Body Spray. And…there’s more to peppermint than fresh breath and sweet tooth satisfaction.
Throughout history, peppermint has been used to treat various skin and other ailments. It is an excellent source of manganese, vitamins C, A and B2, folate, iron, calcium and potassium. However, Violet chose this herb because of the key component in peppermint called menthol. This acts on the cool sensitive receptors on the skin, giving an instant and long-lasting cooling sensation.
Fascinatingly, menthol also works on our brains. Scientists now know that menthol actually tricks our brains and mouths into the cool sensation because this compound activates the same receptor on nerve endings (TRPN8) that’s involved in sensing cold, says David McKemy, a neurobiologist at the University of Southern California.
As McKemy explains in a video, his team found a protein in menthol that is “a trigger on cold sensing nerve fibers to send an electrical signal to the brain to let you know that you’re feeling cold.”
Vi!tal Cool Touch Body Spray incorporates Mentha Piperita (peppermint) leaf water and Mentha Piperita (peppermint) leaf oil. These have been demonstrated to be non-toxic and non-sensitizing (source). At this point, you might be wondering why we didn’t formulate directly with menthol. Well, pure menthol is a known irritant. So, we selected menthone glycerin acetal a gentle and skin-friendly menthol derivative that – unlike menthol itself – is non-irritating. A food grade ingredient, it can be safely used in cosmetics and beauty products for its cooling effects.
As well as keeping you calm, peppermint alleviates skin problems such as rashes and dry skin, while keeping infections, itchiness, and bacterial infections at bay. Finally, peppermint is refreshing in more than one way – it will ease breathing and help us feel alert. This not just due to menthol, but to another important compound called rosmarinic acid. This acts as an antioxidant and blocks the production of inflammatory substances that restrict airways.
Who knew what peppermint could do? My Friend Violet, of course.
May minty magic make your day“- Your Friend, Violet
